EPA Grossly Misrepresents The Toxicity Of Corexit Used In Gulf Of Mexico

Quite incredibly, the EPA issued a positive report on May 1, 2012 regarding the safety and toxicity of various dispersants use in the BP Gulf Oil Spill. Included in this assessment was the use of Corexit.

This report “indicated that all eight dispersants had roughly the same toxicity, and all fell into the “practically non-toxic” or “slightly toxic” category. Scientists found that none of the eight dispersants displayed endocrine-disrupting activity of “biological significance.” The same report went on to say that “dispersant-oil mixtures were generally no more toxic to the aquatic test species than oil alone.”

The first question that jumps out for those who have researched this subject with any degree of thoroughness is how this recent report fails to reconcile with previous studies performed by the EPA. Here is some test data retrieved from the EPA website that was posted previous to the BP Gulf Oil Spill.

“The dispersant (Corexit 9500) and dispersed oil have demonstrated the following levels of toxicity per the EPA website link that follows:
(1) 10.72 parts per million (ppm) of oil alone will kill 50% of the fish test species in a normal aquatic environment within 96 hours.
(2) 25.20 parts per million of dispersant (Corexit 9500) alone will kill 50% of the fish test species in a normal aquatic environment within 96 hours.
(3) 2.61 parts per million of dispersed oil (Corexit-laden) alone will kill 50% of the fish test species in a normal aquatic environment within 96 hours.”

This data diverges from the recent report to such a significant degree that the results which were just posted at the EPA.GOV website under the title of “The BP Oil Spill: Responsive Science Supports Emergency Response” must be seriously scrutinized.

What is the buying public to make of such conflicting data? Those who have medical conditions which require complete avoidance of toxic seafood need to know with certainty what they are eating.
Likewise, the fishermen in the Gulf need to know the true condition of their catch. Swimmers and beachgoers need to know the state of the water, as well as the beaches.
Boaters ought to be informed of the relevant risk factors when out in the areas of recently sprayed waters, whether surface or deep sea.

The most serious questions to emerge from this report revolve around the issue of credibility. Can the EPA ever be trusted again to conduct the necessary research regarding anything having to do with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill caused by BP?
By issuing such blanket statements about the relatively low toxicity associated with this spill, irrespective of location on the beach, in the waters, in the wetlands or estuaries, seems to be quite disingenuous.

Furthermore, the federal government’s declaration that the ‘clean up phase’ of the Deepwater Horizon spill is over begs for review, especially in light of the large quantities of submerged oil unaccounted for residing in the water column, DOJ’s discovery of false flow rate numbers reported by BP and new sightings of oil slicks all over the Gulf. In light of all that, the clean up phase is not over and further use of Corexit dispersant isn’t an effective solution.

Moreover, that the EPA has approved for use a very safe bioremediation agent known as Oil Spill Eater II, but has yet to allow its use in the Gulf raises many additional questions. From our investigation, it has become clear that Corexit has been given preferential treatment over other much safer alternatives. The Gulf Oil Spill Remediation Conference (GOSRC) was quoted as follows in this regard:
“When we heard about Oil Spill Eaters II, and the fact that it is EPA-approved (NCP listed) and has demonstrated its effectiveness at least 14 times for the BP Gulf Oil Spill, we wondered why it wasn’t being used 24/7.”

The GOSRC went on to issue a press release entitled: Coalition Of Enviro, Citizens And Political Groups Demand COREXIT Use Be Stopped which pointed out the deliberate false image which has been created around the use of this toxic dispersant — Corexit 9500.

The Gulf Rescue Alliance (GRA) also made the recent observations in their press release entitled: BP Gulf Oil Spill Revisited
“Many of these studies point out the obvious; that when you mix a tremendous volume of released oil with methane gas and further mix it with a toxic dispersant like Corexit, as they have done throughout this oil spill, a chemical cocktail is created that will have as far-reaching ecological ramifications as it will profound environmental consequences.”

The Earth Orgainization (TEO) has also weighed in on this issue through their release of an excellent documentary entitled: Hidden Crisis in the GULF. Barbara Wiseman, TEO President, has been an ardent advocate for safer oil remediation measures since the very beginning of this oil spill. She has said that,
“At the beginning of the disaster, TEO investigated to find effective, non-toxic technologies currently available in adequate supply to clean up an oil spill of this size. Once we isolated the best solutions, we then investigated to find what the barriers to getting them implemented were. The barriers have all come down to specific people in the EPA. They are, in effect, holding the Gulf hostage and, for some unexplained reason, won’t let it be cleaned up.”

Lastly, perhaps the words of Steven Pedigo reflect the voice of reason more than any other in this ongoing oil spill when he was quoted in A 2nd Anniversary Report on the BP Gulf Oil Spill as follows:
“The toxic dispersants add absolutely nothing to EFFECTIVE RESPONSE. There is no scientific basis for it, and their use violates The Clean Water Act, EPA’s charter and common sense.”
“Corexit’s label clearly states it can cause kidney failure and death and the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) specifically warns, “Do not contaminate surface water” with it. Additionally, toxicity testing in regards to marine species shows little tolerance by all forms of sea life; thus, applying it on spills as a preferred response method increases the toxicity of the spilled oil on which it is used.”

Global Population Explosion Marks The End Of The Iron Age

The Iron Age, also known as the Kali Yuga, is acknowledged by the ancients to contain the seeds of its own destruction. The Mayan Long Count Calendar reveals when and how and where these seeds will sprout and grow into a vine of planetary disintegration.

Picture a thousand dots on a radar screen which have been placed by the Universe itself. Imagine the challenge that is presented to connect those dots into a cohesive whole. To then create such a revealing mosaic complete with color and shape, texture and relief, which accurately portrays an unfolding story in 3D is the final challenge.

A proper understanding and interpretation of the Mayan Long Count calendar, which is pregnant with so much mundane meaning, allows for such a portrayal. Particularly does the Long Count allow for an astonishingly accurate representation of things to come during the final decades of the Iron Age.

If one were to fast forward to 2012 from 1900, one would quickly see that the number of dots on the radar screen at present has increased exponentially. We will only address one of the three largest dots (•) listed below, which speaks directly to how we got to where we are today as a planetary civilization. Without question, the global population explosion is the reddest flag in the whole firmament, waving vigorously in the face of all of humankind. Clearly, a global population in excess of 7 billion ought to indicate that the time is near for a transitioning from one age to the next. Especially when there are so many fatally flawed planetary paradigms supporting such a large number of human beings.    Continue reading

Solar Maximum Ramps Up Earth Cataclysms

How is the SUN triggering many earth changes?

More than any other major co-factor, the unprecedented, meteoric and relentless changes taking place throughout Planet Earth are the direct result of exceedingly powerful influences emanating from the presiding star of our solar system. The sun, and especially its recent and extraordinary activity, is at the very heart of every major geophysical and meteorological event taking place around the globe today.

Were common sense to be utilized more frequently, it would seem readily apparent that global climate change (GCC) is directly the result of the sun’s influence on every aspect of the earth’s geological architecture and biosphere. It is because of this lack of understanding that the conventional wisdom tried to attribute GCC to human activity.

Their first attempt was to say that global warming was primarily due to the outworking of all human endeavor around the planet. Quite inconceivable, since such an extreme correlation within a purely scientific and empirical context makes no sense. However, on the level of consciousness, there is very good reason to link human conduct with earth reactions with solar blowback, as we shall see.   Continue reading

Tepco’s Cheapskate Tactics Put World at Risk

While “Fifty Year Battle” To Save Japan Rages On

By Richard Wilcox

April 6, 2012

“Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. They are but improved means to an unimproved end.”
~ Henry David Thoreau

The system of nature, of which man is a part, tends to be self-balancing, self-adjusting, self-cleansing. Not so with technology.
~ E.F. Schumacher

Since March 27th the Fukushima region has experienced three medium sized earthquakes not to mention a typhoon to boot (1; 2; 3; 4). This is important because a Japanese engineer recently admitted that the situation at the Fukushima No. 1 power station is still dangerous and the unit four fuel pool is vulnerable to earthquakes (5). Due to unit four’s fragile condition–the building is said to be leaning to one side–Tokyo Power Company (Tepco) is “working to fortify the crumpled outer shell of the building” in order to prevent collapse (6; 7). After the most recent earthquake Tepco announced there was no problem but the “Fukuichi live camera” which records activity at the site was shifted slightly to the left by the tremor (8).

An accident to the fuel pool could set off a chain of events involving “a total of 1760 metric tons of fresh and used nuclear fuel” among the six reactors at the disaster site (9). According to Takao Yamada, Expert Senior Writer at the Mainichi Daily News, Tepco dismissed the idea of injecting extra concrete to reinforce the unit four building just after 3/11.   Continue reading

Japan’s Near Miss With Large Scale Nuclear Catastrophe

And The Ongoing Crisis

By Richard Wilcox Ph.D.

March 29, 2012

Spring is finally here. Even in post apocalypse Japan after days of cold rain and gloom the veil has lifted. The blue sky came out the other day and people enjoyed Tokyo’s central park for gentle weather and sunshine dancing on the leaves; the viewing of early variety cherry blossoms; young families had picnics with their children and played ball; college students had boisterous drinking parties; dog owners strolled their barking status symbols; joggers and cyclists made the rounds; comedians, artists, acrobats, musicians and frenzied bongo drummers entertained passersby. Everyone was happy, alas, little did they know the following story.

Reactor Unit No. Four

While it is true that we live in interesting times, they are perhaps, a bit too interesting. As I recently scanned the nuclear news one item jumped out. Japan came “this close” to a large scale nuclear catastrophe, but was saved only by Tokyo Power Company’s (Tepco) mechanical mishap — not by their diligence!

The Asahi newspaper reported that at the time of the March 2011 earthquake/tsunami that destroyed the Fukushima nuclear reactors:

“A decrease in the water level [at unit four] could have caused exposure and
overheating of the nuclear fuel and a massive discharge of radiation and
radioactive substances. That would not only have made the entire
Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant inaccessible, but also could have led to theabandonment of the Fukushima No. 2 plant and other nuclear power plantslocated nearby.
Worst-case scenarios envisaged by the governments in Tokyo and
Washington involved the evacuation of residents from the Tokyo
metropolitan area. In reality, however, a displaced separator gate between
the spent fuel storage pool and the adjoining reactor well apparently created
an opening, allowing about 1,000 tons of water to flow from the reactor well
into the storage pool, it was learned later.
The injection of outside water into the storage pool began on March 20. As a
result, the fuel in the [unit four] pool was kept at relatively safe levels
during the crisis” (1).   Continue reading

Japanese Regularly Eating Food Containing Radio Nuclides Such As Cesium

By Richard Wilcox PhD

“Nuclear power? We don’t have a hope. These people are so far off the track they should be classified as stark raving lunatics. The population is not out on the street demanding the removal of all the lunatics? They must all be lunatics too (1).”
–  Tony Boys, nuclear crisis archive: http://candobetter.net/node/2603

Damnably unstable atoms have been carelessly released from the Demon From Hell Nuclear Reactor in Fukushima, Japan. That’s OK: a becqueral a day keeps the doctor away, but not the undertaker.

On paper, Japan has radiation exposure limits for food that are the same as the EU and stricter than the UN or the USA (2). Beginning on April 1, 2012, standards will become even stricter allowing for only 100 becquerals per kilogram (Bq/kg) in food (3). So those of us living in Japan will be pretty safe? Not so fast.

I recently came across a researcher named William Milberry and I recommend his Youtube site for a number of informative reports on the radioactive contamination levels in food and soil in Japan (4). In one video I learned of the following website that does independent testing and was not shocked to learn that much of the food in the northeastern and greater Tokyo region that is being produced has detectable levels of radiation (5; 6; 7). Even for those who cannot read Japanese, by clicking on this link:

HUGE Changes Coming To Planet Earth

Cosmic Convergence Accelerates Epochal Planetary Transformation

What happens when an unparalleled Solar Maximium occurs while Pluto is cruising through Capricorn, seismic activity and vulcanism (both undersea and on land) have already seen a dramatic uptick, technospheric breakdown has greatly accelerated, entire species have vacated the planet as whole ecosystems are irreparably destroyed, global climate change appears as global warming, cooling, drought or deluge, and the worldwide financial system is on the verge of collapse, as in a total and complete, irreversible monetary meltdown? Believe it or not, these actual occurrences and various eventualities are the very least of our problems. Here’s why:

There are certain ‘progressive’ developments and converging circumstances which will dictate the course of our future as a global civilization and human race – the fifth (and sixth) root race(s)[1] to have inhabited planet Earth since it has revolved around the sun. That which will serve to “accelerate epochal planetary transformation” considerably more than any other major precipitating cause can be summed up as follows:

“When scientific knowledge and applied technology reach a critical level of advancement, without being informed by spiritual truths and guided by moral authority, the current civilization will relinquish its right to continue as it is.”
~ Cosmic Convergence Research Group

Truly, the greatest determinant of the immediate future of humanity is the extent to which science and technology – unalloyed to ethical and moral considerations – continue to challenge what has historically fallen within the “domain of the gods”. The ancient Greeks had some very poignant mythical legends which clearly spell out the relevant lesson for humankind concerning this most profound and highly consequential prognostication.

Perhaps the story of Icarus – flying too closely to the Sun with his wax wings – is an apt metaphor for the current direction that our civilization is heading in. Certainly it could represent the way humanity has approached so many new and diverse untested technologies, as well as countless scientific applications in use throughout the world. For as long as his story has been told, Icarus has served as a tragic mythological example of hubris and blind ambition.
